The Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance promotes green, safe and healthy homes for children and families in Omaha, Nebraska. In 2004, Omaha was designated the largest residential Superfund site in the country by the EPA. At the time, lead contamination in the city’s external environment had caused a spike in the in the number of children with elevated blood lead levels. In 2006, as the EPA worked to replace lead contaminated soil in Omaha’s residential properties, Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance (OHKA) was created to provide the city a comprehensive program capable of addressing all sources of childhood lead poisoning. Since then, OHKA’s services have expanded to include all aspects of Healthy Housing, helping to keep kids safe from environmental hazards like mold, dust mites, radon, asbestos, carbon monoxide, and pests.
Equality New Mexico (EQNM), the state’s largest LGBTQ civil rights organization, is a nonprofit that develops and implements public education, outreach and advocacy efforts to improve the quality of life for LGBTQ New Mexicans and their families. EQNM works throughout the state of New Mexico to end discrimination, and to shape public opinion and policy by strengthening alliances with local, regional and national partners.
The paws4people foundation was founded by Kyria Henry in 1999 (then 12 years old!) with the mission of Assistance Dogs transforming lives. paws4people foundation raises, trains, and places Assistance Dogs with children, veterans, military dependents, and civilians living with disabilities. The organization provides certification, insurance, and support for the client/dog teams for the duration of their career. paws4eople currently has more than 300 Assistance Dogs providing support in areas such as mobility and medical alert, educational and rehabilitative assistance, and social therapy. Together, these dogs have made more than 1,000,000 therapeutic contacts.
The ARVC Rebels Volleyball Club is a nonprofit organization based in Albuquequerque, New Mexico, which is committed to providing high quality and competitive volleyball programs for children of all ages. The ARVC is raising funds to assist with scholarships and the cost of uniforms, tournaments, equipment and travel. Support for these activities provide a healthy and constructive activity for local youth–most of which continue the sport in college. Currently, ARVC is sending six teams to USA Volleyball Junior Nationals in New Orleans, Louisiana. ARVC is the only club in New Mexico who had teams qualify to play with the best of the best in the nation.
The Albuquerque Opera Guild supports the education and community programs of The Santa Fe Opera. The Guild promotes these opportunities through membership, fundraising, community engagement, and non-partisan advocacy for the arts community. By bringing programs that have been developed and nurtured by The Santa Fe Opera to the Albuquerque community at large, the Guild provides fun, interesting activities and events for local youth and families, as well as adult learning and social outreach. The education and community engagement programs offered during the coming year are designed to build an appreciation of the spectacular art-form of opera and the love of music.
The Willamette Humane Society is a vital component of the Marion and Polk counties of Oregon. They have been providing compassionate services to pets and people since 1965. Last year, they served 61,740 people, and 8,804 animals — an approximate 15.4% of the population. A key service they provide is educating youths in humane treatment of animals. Last year, 3,447 students in area schools received valuable lessons about personal safety around animals, proper pet care and compassion for animals. 883 students and adults attended 38 shelter tours, 130 students took part in 10 summer camps and 25 birthday parties brought 714 friends and family members to the shelter to celebrate and learn about animals to strengthen the bond between pets and people.
